About ACM India Summer/Winter Schools

ACM India Summer/Winter School Objectives:

Inculcating problem solving as a skill, which is not emphasised much in the undergraduate curriculum
Providing exposure to leading experts, advanced topics and taste of research to motivated students
Exposing students to research opportunities in the career, whether in academia or industry

Salient Features of the Schools:

Organized at multiple geographical regions in the country
Conducted by faculty comprising leading experts from academia and industry on advanced topics in computing
Target audience:
• senior undergraduate students or those enrolled in Masters or higher degree programs
• around 40 students per school: from nationwide applicants, selected based on academic performance, Statement of Purpose etc. criteria
1 to 2 weeks full-time course in June-July or December-January
Hosted at an academic institution

● “The ACM Winter school at NISER was really fun . The normal curriculum in our college doesn't cover all these advanced topics which were taught to us in the winter school. Learning something out of the scope of the college syllabus which also aligned with my interest was exciting.

The professors at the winter school were excellent and explained the concepts really well. I noticed a substantial difference between the style in which the professors taught at the winter school as compared to our college.

Manoj sir continuously forced us to ask as many questions as possible and threatened us by saying, "If you don't ask me questions, I'll ask you questions and then if you can't answer that won't be good." He kept the class engaged by cracking jokes and I really loved that.

Anup sir explained everything very concisely in a lucid manner.

All our doubts regarding the future scope of what this field holds for us was clearly explained by Sourav sir who also gave us a peek into how industry and research in algorithms goes hand in hand. All the other professors were top researchers in their respective fields and explained all the concepts really well.

Although some professors were difficult to follow due to a large number of prerequisites to understand the concepts, it was still quite enjoyable to understand the overall concepts and take an overview of the topic and try and understand as much as I could .

I understood all the algorithms and theorems studied in the winter school but proving them and understanding them was a challenging task. I did understand the proof for many algorithms and theorems but for others I could understand them only partially.

The most important takeaway from this winter school for me would be the kind of foresight that I got about how people work as researchers in the field of algorithms. It definitely deepened my interest in learning more about developing algorithms and making them even more efficient. I am very thankful to ACM for providing me this wonderful opportunity.”
