Call for ACM India Summer/Winter School

Objectives for ACM India Summer/Winter Schools:

  • Creating a taste for research in the career (in academia or industry) through a one-semester equivalent course of holistic content of theoretical and applied research in a technology area
  • Providing motivated students with exposure to leading experts and advanced topics
  • Inculcating problem-solving as a skill, which is not well emphasised in the academic curriculum

Common requirements:

  • Winter school: In December/January for two weeks: timeframe determined by the host institute, based on their winter break and hostel availability.
  •  Summer school: In June/July for two weeks: timeframe determined by the host institute, based on their summer break and hostel availability.
  • About 60-70 students selected from applications across India. Final year bachelor's or above. Depending on the topic, the school may sometimes be organized only for postgraduate students. ACM India will manage the registration and publicity.
  •  Students are responsible for their own laptop and travel between home town and school venue (host institute). Lodging and boarding of outstation students will be covered by the summer/winter school.

Host institute responsibility and benefits:

  • Cover the expense for classroom and network infrastructure.
  • Cover expenses for hostel accommodation of students and TAs.
  •  Preference will be given to host institutions that can also sponsor participants’ meals.
  •  Additionally the host institute can cover expenses for faculty guest house lodging/boarding and food of the school speakers. Typically a speaker stays for 2-3 nights depending on how many days they teach.
  •  Identify one faculty member as local coordinator, who will own local coordination and logistics, including transportation between hostel and school venue, infrastructure availability and finances. See “Conducting ACM India Schools” for details.

  1. Educational institutions seeking to organise ACM India Summer/Winter Schools, can write to [email protected], giving the following details before 30th July if they are planning for winter school and before 30th January if they are planning for summer school.
    1. Name of the institution
    2. Details of the contact person including his/her department, and contact details (email, phone number),
    3. Tentative dates of the school
    4. Funding available from the host institution for the event (please put estimated values in INR)
      • Funds to cover the accommodation and meals of participants and speakers
      • Funds for miscellaneous expenses like banner, certificate printing etc.
    5. Number of guest house / other facility rooms available for outstation speakers
    6. The academic programs at the institution, NIRF ranking, number of faculty numbers and research areas of the institution.
  2. ACM India School Committee will notify the decision in the month of March (for Summer school) and in the month of August (for winter school).
  3. ACM India will finalize the academic coordinator of each school.
