Instructional Training Programs Hosted by ACM India / IARCS
ACM India and IARCS organize multiple events aimed at improving and modernizing computer science education in India at the undergraduate and graduate level. If you are an instructor (or college) teaching computer science in India, and are looking to upgrade your (your teachers’) knowledge and teaching skills, you will find a list of programs here that might be helpful to you.
Specifically, we organize three different kinds of programs.
- Instructional course: College and/or university teachers are invited to organize instructional courses at their home institute to strengthen the foundations of their staff in any particular area of Computer Science. The local arrangements are taken care of by the organizers themselves. The instructors will be fixed with the help of IARCS, and the honorarium (for the instructor(s)) is covered by IARCS.
- Teaching partnership program: Through this program, experts (from premier academic institutes and industry) partner with faculty from top colleges to teach core or elective courses in the college during their regular course offering. Experts provide help in creating the content of the classes and can even visit the college to take some classes.
- CSEDU Program: This program is organized by ACM every year to improve the teaching capability of teachers in different subjects of Computer Science. Experts (on different subjects) come to a central location (planned by ACM) and take this workshop. The Program is for teachers of Computer Science in both Engineering (B.Tech/BE) as well as non-Engineering (B.Sc./BCA/MCA). Participants are charged a nominal fee. Institutes can register multiple faculty and make the payment together too.
If you are interested in any of these programs, please go through the detailed information below.
Instructional course (IARCS):
Intended audience: College/teachers looking to improve their knowledge and teaching skills in a particular area of computer science. It could be a basic or an advanced topic.
Location and duration: This is decided by the organizers (college/teachers). This program can range from 2-3 days to 2-3 weeks, depending upon the organizers and the instructors' preference.
Participants: This will be mostly faculty from the organizing college. Though, we highly encourage the organizers to include faculty from surrounding colleges too.
Application process: Interested colleges (teachers) can send a proposal with the following information to this email.
● Personal details: Name, designation, affiliation of the organizers.
● Proposed duration, dates, location and topic (please justify).
● Expected number of participants, local support provided (classroom, stay for instructor etc.)
● Proposed instructors
We will get back to you with approval and/or suggestion of possible instructors. Organizers can contact any of the approved instructors. Once a positive reply is obtained from an instructor, the course can be organized according to their and organizers convenience.
Funding: Local hospitality and arrangements are taken care of by the organizers. IARCS will cover the honorarium of the instructors and their travel. Please visit the link for more detailed information.
Teaching partnership program (ACM):
Intended audience: College students
Location and duration: College organizing the program. Experts work with the local faculty to give lectures and to offer suggestions on content, delivery and resources during the offering of the course through the semester.
Participants: Experts from premier academic institutes and industry, partner with faculty from top colleges to teach core or elective courses in the college during their regular course offering
Application process: Experts from premier institutions and industry wanting to participate in the program can write to Prof. Venkatesh Raman at: [email protected]
● Personal details: Name, designation, affiliation of the organizers.
● Proposed duration, dates, location and topic (please justify).
● Expected number of participants, local support provided (classroom, stay for instructor etc.)
● Proposed instructors
Funding: Based on the requests, ACM India chooses the experts and colleges, and manages the expenses.
CSEDU Program (ACM):
Intended audience: The Program is for teachers of Computer Science in both Engineering (BTech/BE) as well as non-Engineering (BSc/BCA/MCA). The aim is to improve the teaching capability of teachers in different subjects of Computer Science.
Location and duration: The CSEDU program follows different teaching modes, where we follow a blend of online, offline, and hybrid sessions. Each module is taught uniquely over 1 to 2 weeks. The online lectures/labs are very similar to earlier teaching methods in the CSEDU program. The offline sessions are introduced in such a way that helps the currently engaged faculty's working schedule. The venue of the offline sessions is arranged based on convenience to the audience and faculty.
Participants: The Program is organized by modules, where each module focuses on improving teaching capabilities in specific subjects. Each module will be taught by the top experts in the country in that subject.
Syllabus: Each subject-specific module will be taught by a small group of faculty from top institutions who have expertise in that subject. For each subject, the group will use the AICTE's model curriculum as the base, but will also take feedback from attendees on what topics they face difficulties in, or they feel are important. Each module will discuss important aspects of the AICTE syllabus, and will also try to address the issues raised by the attendees. As it turns out, AICTE is revising its model curriculum and the chair of the AICTE committee is the same as the Chair of the steering committee of this program. It is envisaged that the experts teaching the module for X in this Program will also be involved in designing the module on X in the AICTE curriculum, thereby providing a good alignment of this initiative with AICTE's model curriculum.
Certificates: The program is supported by ACM India. Those who have completed at least 75% of classes/attendance only are eligible for the certificate. The certificates will contain either of the following three remarks:
● Attended the module
● Attended and successfully completed the module
● Attended and completed the module with excellent performance
Note: Those not completing the course completion criteria (as specified by the Module instructors) will not be eligible for any certificate.
Fees: The fee structure varies for the offering module. This fee includes all lectures, recordings, and all the resources/material provided. The registration is open to all faculty who teach CS subjects. Registration is also available for PhD and Mtech students who want to make a teaching career.
Institutes who want to register multiple faculty and make the payment together for all the faculty members they are sponsoring may send a mail to [email protected] giving names of the faculty they want to sponsor and for which module.
Refund Policy: 10% of the fee will be deducted if one wants to cancel the registration before the module starts. 50% of the fee will be refunded if the cancellation is done after the first class and before the second session in the module. No refunds after the second session.
ACM Case Studies
Written by leading domain experts for software engineers, ACM Case Studies provide an in-depth look at how software teams overcome specific challenges by implementing new technologies, adopting new practices, or a combination of both. Often through first-hand accounts, these pieces explore what the challenges were, the tools and techniques that were used to combat them, and the solution that was achieved.
